A representative from the Bhutan Travel Bureau meets you at the Paro airport. After lunch, you spend the afternoon exploring Paro, including a visit to the Ta Dzong National Museum. The museum's collection of religious relics, artwork, and handicrafts provides a fascinating glimpse into Bhutan's historical and cultural past. Next, you visit the Rimpong Dzong to see the image of the legendary saint Milarepa, who is revered by Bhutanese as the master of meditation and is said to have attained enlightenment in a single lifetime.

After breakfast, you hike to Taktsang Monastery. The track is spacious, and the 1.5 to 2-hour upward hike takes you well above the Paro valley. The vista from Taktsang Monastery, perched on a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley level, is breathtaking. The legendary Guru Rimpoche is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress in the 8th century to bring Buddhist Dharma teachings to Bhutan. A nearby teahouse serves lunch. In the afternoon, you drive to the nearly fully restored Drukgyel Dzong. Shabdrung built the original monument in 1644 to celebrate his triumph over Tibetan invaders, but it was destroyed by fire in 1951. In good weather, the high peak of the sacred Mount Jomolhari (7314m) provides a beautiful backdrop. On the way back to Paro, you stop at other Paro Valley attractions.

From Paro, drive to Drukgyel Dzong and then hike 17 kilometers to Shana.

The journey begins at Drukgyel Dzong (2580m) with a short downhill hike along a wide track. The track then slowly climbs through well-maintained rice terraces and millet fields. Later, you visit apple orchards and forests. Soon, the valley widens, and you arrive at the army garrison of Gunitsawa (2810m). This is the final halt before Tibet. You continue up just past Sharma Zampa (2870m), where several decent camping spots are in meadows bordered by trees.

The trail follows the Pa Chu (Paro River), rising and falling through forests of pine, oak, and spruce. After crossing a bridge to the river's left bank, you stop for lunch. You then continue along the river, climbing through rhododendron woodlands, crossing the river again, and finally arriving at the campsite.

Trek from Soe Thangthangkha to Jangothang, 19 kilometers.

The path ascends for a while before reaching the army camp. You then follow the river above the tree line, enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. A hot meal is served at a yak herder's camp. A short walk through the valley leads you to the campground in Jangothang. From this vantage point, the views of Chomolhari and Jichu Drake are stunning.

Today, you hike back to observe the first day of the mountain festival. The Marchang ceremony takes place before the festival begins. Afterward, the Soe community performs a welcoming dance and a native song. The main guest opens the stalls, followed by a yak and horse display. After lunch, there are open competitions for entertainment, including Khuru, shot put, and horseback or yak riding. In the evening, you hike back to Jangothang at the base camp.

From Jangothang Trek to Lingshi 18 kilometers

The trail follows a moderate stream for about half an hour before crossing a bridge to the right bank. You then begin your ascent up the first ridge, enjoying beautiful views of Chomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tserimgang. The trail leads across a relatively level valley floor before climbing to Nyele-la Pass (4700m). Afterward, you gently descend from the pass, taking in panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks and Lingshi Dzong before arriving at the campsite in Lingshi.

22-kilometre hike from Lingshi to Shodu.

The trail leads up to a small white chorten on a ridge above the camp before turning south into the deep Mo Chu valley. The trail stays on the west side of this largely treeless valley, gradually ascending a little above the Mo Chu. It then crosses the river and climbs steeply for two hours to Yeli-La (4820 meters). On a clear day, you can see Chomolhari, Gangchenta, Tserimgang, and Masagang from this pass. The trail then descends beside a stream to a rock shelter in a cliff wall. It continues downstream to Shodu, where you camp in a meadow with a chorten.

The trail gently descends through a lush forest of rhododendron, birch, and conifers before dropping steeply to the Thimphu Chu. The path follows the left bank of the river, crossing slopes and descending into gorges where small streams flow into the river. The final section of the trail climbs over a cliff face high above the Thimphu Chu, eventually leading to Pastureland, where you camp for the night.

The trail then descends steeply to the river and follows it south to the roadhead at Dodena (2600m). Transportation from Bhutan Travel Bureau awaits here, and you drive to Thimphu.
